First Week

What a great class!!!

We have spent the week getting to know one another and the rules and procedures.  We have also been reviewing many things and reading a cool story called "The Lost Lake".  I am very excited about the energy and creativeness of this class.  Make sure that you check the homework sheet each night and sign it on Thursday night.  Spelling test will be numbers, such as 74 or 3,982.  Students will have to write out the numbers in words, including commas.

Parent Letter

Dear parents,

Welcome!  My name is Marian Miller and I will be your child’s teacher for the upcoming school year.  I am excited to be teaching fourth grade.
One of my goals this year is to get every student organized in their study habits.  To help with this, every week I will send home a HOMEWORK sheet.  Please return this sheet each day.  On this sheet is listed all the assignments they need to do at home, along with any school announcements.  Monday-Thursday students should read for the assigned time and write the title of the book and pages read.   You will find that this will help tremendously on the TAKS test in April.  Please work to get your child to read for this amount of time or more.  On days when they are unable to read, just try and make-up this time on another day that week.  The students, or I, will list any other assignments that need to be finished as well.
Your child will also be putting together a MOOSE notebook to help keep them organized.  They should place assignments, notes and graded papers inside.  If you notice your child is not keeping their MOOSE organized, please talk to them about organization.  I promise, the habits they learn in 4th grade will pay off, especially in Middle and High School someday!
This year your child will be taking 3 TAKS tests.  In March, they will take the Writing test, and in late April, they will take Math and Reading tests.
Enclosed with this letter is a copy of our class schedule and other important information.  Also, check the supply list to see that your child has everything they need to have a good school year.  Also enclosed is a Student Information sheet.  Please fill this out and return as soon as you can.  Please feel free to call me or email me if you have any questions or concerns.
To help keep you up to date on events and assignments, I have created a blog for parents.  There is also a blog we will use in class with helpful links for the students.

Classroom Policies - Procedures - Rules 2010-2011

HOMEWORK SHEET
Every week, students will receive a homework sheet.  Some assignments and due dates will be printed on these.  Students are responsible for writing down any additional assignments or any work they did not finish in class.

HANDWRITING
All work will be done in cursive script.  If your child did not receive instruction in cursive, please let me know and I will make some practice sheets to help them learn.

LATE WORK
All late work will be penalized as follows:
One day late -  11 points will be deducted.
Two days late -  21 points will be deducted.
Three or more days late -  grade given will be zero

ABSENCES – Make up Work
•  All students are responsible for getting make-up work after an absence.  All journals and at home reading should be done even when absent.  Please notify me if you know your child is going to be out of school ahead of time.  It is also helpful to pick up assignments on the date of the absence.

CHEATING
Cheating on homework, daily assignments, quizzes, or tests will result in a ZERO!

CORRECTIONS
If a student receives a grade on daily work below 70, the student may correct the assignment to improve their grade.  The paper must be fully corrected and returned to me in a timely manor.   Final corrected grade will depend on the assignment, the corrections and the original grade received.  I reserve the right to limit the amount of corrections I will accept from each student.

Mrs. Miller’s Classroom Expectations

If it is not yours, don’t touch it.
Walk, don’t run, at all times in the building or in line.
Ask permission to leave your seat.
Do not talk while others are talking, working, or reading.
Do what your teacher says quickly.

Students will have a star to keep in their MOOSE book zipper pouch.   If there is a behavior problem, they must turn in the star to me for the day.  This is a quick way for you to know how your child is behaving.  I will also try and write  a note to you and place it in the zipper pouch in place of the star, especially if the behavior is excessive.

Consequences:

1st Offense: Verbal Warning
2nd Offense: Verbal Warning / Turn in STAR to teacher
3rd Offense:  Classroom punishment as determined by teacher, contact parent
4th Offense:  Referral to Principal
